Solar panels in Croydon: one street where the rules really are stricter
Croydon is a large borough with a lot of variety, from the town centre's blocks of flats to Victorian streets and the hillside suburbs of Kenley, Purley and Sanderstead. For most houses, solar on a pitched roof is permitted development. The exception worth knowing about is the Chatsworth Road Conservation Area, where the council has taken solar out of permitted development altogether.
The Chatsworth Road exception
Chatsworth Road is a conservation area close to the town centre, made up of large Victorian and Edwardian houses. Its Article 4 direction came into force on 21 January 2016, which is well after householder solar rights were introduced, and it was written with solar in mind. We have read the sealed direction. It removes the right to install solar PV or solar thermal equipment, alongside alterations to the roof and several other types of work. The council's 2014 report on the direction confirms it applies across the whole conservation area.
In practice, if your house is on Chatsworth Road or in the surrounding streets covered by the direction (including parts of Barclay Road, Coombe Road, Park Lane and Mulgrave Road), solar panels on any roof slope need a planning application, and so do alterations to the roof. We check whether an address falls inside the boundary before we design anything, and our guide to planning permission for solar panels in London explains what an application involves.
Conservation areas and other Article 4 directions
Croydon has more than 20 conservation areas, including Addington Village, Beulah Hill, Bradmore Green, Croydon Minster, the East India Estate and Kenley Aerodrome. Outside Chatsworth Road, the national rules apply. Under the national rules, the restriction in a conservation area or World Heritage Site applies to panels on a wall fronting a highway, not to a roof slope. Panels on a pitched roof, including a front roof slope, are normally permitted development as long as they sit no more than 0.2 m proud of the roof and below the ridge. Since 27 August 2026, a flat roof in a conservation area needs a short prior approval application to the council first.
The borough's other Article 4 directions do not touch solar. The Waldrons direction (2016) covers only hard surfaces and boundary walls and fences at numbers 5 to 23. The Kenley Aerodrome, Kenley Lane and Hawkhirst Road, and Mitchley Hill and Dunmail Drive directions all predate 2008 and deal with open Green Belt land, mainly fences, gates and access. Croydon's Local Heritage Areas do not remove permitted development rights at all. Our London list of Article 4 directions that affect solar shows which other boroughs have them.
Listed buildings need planning permission and listed building consent for solar.
Roofs in conservation areas
The council's conservation area guidance places weight on keeping original roof forms and materials, and favours reusing original slates or tiles on front slopes when a roof is relaid. It also notes that solar slates can be made to resemble existing tiles. If your roof needs work before panels go on, it is worth planning both together; see whether you need a new roof before solar.
Flats in Croydon
If you live in a flat, in the town centre or elsewhere in the borough, the rules changed recently. Since 27 August 2026, blocks of flats have permitted development rights for solar for the first time, but the right belongs to the block, so the freeholder or management company makes the decision, not an individual flat owner.
Connecting to the grid
Croydon's electricity network is run by UK Power Networks. Every system needs a notification or application to them, and larger systems or batteries may need approval before installation. We handle this paperwork; our guide to DNOs and export limits explains how it works.
If you live in Croydon and want to know where your property stands, request a solar and battery quotation. We check the designations for your address before we quote, so you know from the start whether planning permission is needed.
Local planning information checked against Croydon Council sources on 28 October 2026. Planning designations change, so this is general guidance, not advice for a specific property.
Solar Benefits for Croydon Residents
Is my home suitable for solar panels?
During your free home survey we'll assess your roof's orientation, pitch and condition, along with any shading from trees or neighbouring buildings. We'll tell you honestly whether solar is a good fit for your home, and if it is, we'll design the system around getting the best out of it.
How much can I save on my energy bills?
It depends on how much electricity you use, when you use it, the size and orientation of your system, and whether you add a battery to store daytime solar for the evening. Rather than quote a typical figure, we model the expected generation and savings for your home as part of your free quote, using your actual bills and roof.
How long does installation take?
We aim to get your system up and running as quickly as we can. After your survey, installation is typically scheduled within 2–8 weeks, though the exact timing depends on things like DNO approval, scaffolding, roof access and how complex the system is. We agree a date with you once those are confirmed.
Do you offer finance options?
Yes, finance may be available, subject to status. Ask us about it when you request your quote.
What does the quote cover?
Your written quotation lists everything included for your home – the panels, inverter, any battery, mounting, scaffolding where your home needs it, electrical work, DNO paperwork and MCS certification – with one total price. What’s on the quotation is what you pay, with no hidden extras.
Do you offer a guarantee?
We offer a 6-year workmanship warranty, insurance-backed through IWA, on top of the manufacturer warranties covering the panels, inverter and battery. Annual servicing, monitoring checks and fault finding are available as an aftercare service. If something isn’t right with our work, we come back and put it right.
