EV Charger Installation in London, Designed Around Your Solar and Battery
We install home EV chargers across London and around 50 miles beyond. If you already have solar panels or a home battery, or plan to, we set the charger up to work with them, so the car uses your own electricity where it can and the battery is not emptied into it by accident.
Solar Panels London is an MCS-certified solar and battery installer. Every charger installation starts the same way: we check your supply, your earthing and what else in the house draws power, before we recommend where the charger goes and how it should be set up.
Charging your car from your own solar panels
A charger with a solar mode watches how much electricity your home is sending to the grid, using a small sensor (a CT clamp) at the meter. When the panels are producing more than the house is using, it sends that surplus to the car instead of exporting it.
There is one limit worth knowing. A car needs a minimum charging rate before it will charge at all, roughly 1.4 kW on a normal single-phase home supply. On a dull day the surplus is often below that, so the charger either tops up from the grid or waits, depending on the mode you choose. Solar charging works best for cars that sit at home during the day, and alongside a cheap overnight tariff for everything else.
Adding a charger to a home that already has a battery
This is where most installations go wrong, and it is the main reason to have the charger set up by someone who understands the battery.
The battery can empty into the car
A charger cannot tell where its electricity comes from. If the home battery is discharging to cover the house while the car is plugged in, the car can drain the battery in an hour or so. The battery and charger need setting up so that does not happen, or only happens when you want it to.
Sensors in the right place
The battery, the inverter and a solar-aware charger all rely on current sensors at the meter. If one is fitted in the wrong place or the wrong way round, the system behaves backwards. We check every sensor, not just the new one.
Tariff schedules that agree
On a smart EV tariff, the car, the battery and sometimes the hot water all want the same cheap hours. We set the schedules so they do not fight each other or trip the supply.
Systems another company installed
We can add a charger to solar and battery systems we did not fit. We will need to see the inverter, the battery and the monitoring before we design the set-up.
If you do not have a battery yet, our guide to what size solar battery you need explains how an EV changes the sizing, and adding a battery to existing solar panels covers the retrofit route.
Your supply: why we check the load first
A typical home charger can draw up to 32 amps for hours at a time. Add a heat pump, an electric cooker and a battery charging from the grid overnight, and a home can ask for more than its supply can safely give.
So before we quote, we look at your main fuse, what else is on the supply and when it runs. Where the numbers are tight, the charger can be fitted with load management, which turns the charging rate down automatically when the house needs the power. Where a supply upgrade is genuinely needed, we tell you early, because that is arranged with the network operator and has its own timescale.
Safety: earthing and the right protection
Most London homes have what electricians call a PME earth, where the supply's neutral and earth share a conductor in the street. If that conductor ever breaks, metalwork connected to the earth can become live. Indoors that risk is managed. Outdoors, with a car body you can touch while standing on wet ground, it is not acceptable.
The wiring regulations therefore require extra protection for an outdoor charger on a PME supply. In practice that usually means a charger with built-in protection that detects the fault and disconnects, along with the correct type of residual current protection. We confirm the earthing arrangement at the survey and specify the protection to match. It is not something to leave to chance or to a plug-in lead.
How an installation works
1. Survey
Supply, earthing, load, cable route, where the car parks, and any solar or battery already in place.
2. Design and quote
The charger, its position, the protection it needs and how it will work with your solar and battery.
3. Installation
Usually a single day for a straightforward home installation, tested and certified on completion.
4. Set-up
Charger app, solar mode, tariff schedule and battery settings configured together, then shown to you.
5. Notification
We notify the local electricity network operator, which is a requirement for every chargepoint.
6. Aftercare
If anything stops working, the same team that set it up can look at the whole system.
London homes: terraces, flats and no driveway
No off-street parking
A home charger needs somewhere to park off the road, or an approved way of crossing the pavement. Some London boroughs now approve cross-pavement cable channels; each council runs its own scheme. A cable trailed across the pavement from a household socket is not a safe or acceptable answer.
Flats and leasehold
If you own or rent a flat with an allocated space, the freeholder or landlord usually needs to agree before anything is fitted. Start that conversation early. We can survey the route from your supply to the space so you have something specific to put to them.
Planning permission
A wall-mounted charger serving your own off-street parking is normally permitted development. Listed buildings are the main exception. We check the position for your address, as we do for solar panels.
Smart chargers are the law
Chargers sold for homes in Great Britain must have smart functions, including default off-peak charging and a randomised start. Every charger we fit meets these rules.
Government chargepoint grants
The government's chargepoint grants are running for a final year, to 31 March 2027. They cover flat owners and renters with private parking, households using an approved cross-pavement solution, landlords and workplaces. There is currently no grant for owners of houses with their own driveway.
Grants are claimed by an installer authorised for the scheme, not by you, and eligibility depends on your circumstances. Check the current rules on GOV.UK, and ask us about your situation when you enquire.
Common questions
Can I charge my car only from solar?
On a sunny day, often yes, if the car is at home and the charger has a solar-only mode. Through autumn and winter the surplus is usually too small, so most owners combine solar charging with a cheap overnight rate.
Will my home battery drain into my car?
It can, if the two are not set up to work together. The charger cannot tell battery power from solar or grid power. We configure the battery and charger so the car only takes from the battery when you want it to.
Is my main fuse big enough?
Often it is, especially with load management. It depends on what else the house runs and when. We check it at the survey rather than guess.
Do I need to tell UK Power Networks?
The network operator has to be told about every chargepoint, but that is the installer's job, not yours. If your supply needs upgrading, the operator arranges it and we explain what that involves.
Can you fit a charger alongside solar another company installed?
Yes. We will look at the existing inverter, battery and monitoring first so the charger works with them rather than against them.
Do you cover my area?
We cover all of London and roughly 50 miles beyond it. If you are not sure, ask.
Request an EV charger survey
Tell us about your car, where it parks and whether you have solar or a battery. We will check your supply and design a charger set-up that suits the whole house.
Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. We reply to enquiries within one working day.

Is my home suitable for solar panels?
During your free home survey we'll assess your roof's orientation, pitch and condition, along with any shading from trees or neighbouring buildings. We'll tell you honestly whether solar is a good fit for your home, and if it is, we'll design the system around getting the best out of it.
