Solar panels in Enfield: suburban roofs, 22 conservation areas and some newer Article 4 directions
Many of Enfield's conservation areas are suburban streets of family houses, such as the late Victorian and Edwardian houses of Bush Hill Park and the inter-war semis of Grange Park, and the planning picture for solar on them is more layered than many people expect. Enfield Council lists 22 conservation areas, from Enfield Town, Forty Hill and Clay Hill in the north to Winchmore Hill, Southgate Green, Grange Park and Bush Hill Park further south, and several of them are covered by Article 4 directions made in or after 2008. That date matters for solar, as explained below.
What the national rules allow in a conservation area
Under the national rules, the restriction in a conservation area or World Heritage Site applies to panels on a wall fronting a highway, not to a roof slope. Panels on a pitched roof, including a front roof slope, are normally permitted development as long as they sit no more than 0.2 m proud of the roof and below the ridge. Since 27 August 2026, a flat roof in a conservation area needs a short prior approval application to the council first. Listed buildings need planning permission and listed building consent. Our guide to planning permission for solar panels in London covers these rules in more detail.
Article 4 directions in Enfield, and why the date matters
Householder permitted development rights for solar were introduced in 2008. An Article 4 direction made before then cannot have taken them away, but one made later can. Enfield has older directions (Enfield Lock in 1982, and a 2006 direction covering eleven conservation areas including Bush Hill Park, Winchmore Hill, Hadley Wood and Trent Park), and three made since 2008:
a 2008 direction covering most of Grange Park, Meadway and The Crescent
a 2009 direction covering the new Abbotshall Avenue conservation area and extensions to Clay Hill, Forty Hill, Enfield Lock and Southgate Green
a 2017 direction for the whole Enfield Town conservation area, which the council expected to cover around 900 homes
We have read all three. They bring a long list of works facing a road or open space under control, including extensions, alterations to a roof slope that faces the street, porches, chimneys, hard surfaces, front boundaries and painting. None of them removes the right to fit solar panels. The council's Grange Park appraisal did single out one set of front roof panels as harmful to the street scene and said it was investigating wider controls, so we check the current position for your street before we design or quote.
Flat roofs and older roof coverings
Abbotshall Avenue, near Arnos Grove, is a small group of 1930s "moderne" houses, and the council's appraisal notes that all of them have flat roofs. Under the August 2026 rules, panels on a flat roof in a conservation area need prior approval first, so we build that step into the timetable.
Elsewhere, the Bush Hill Park appraisal lists natural slate and clay tile as the original roofing and identifies their replacement with concrete tiles as a loss of character. If your roof needs work before panels go on, read whether you need a new roof before solar and check with us early, because an Article 4 direction can bring roof alterations under control even where the panels themselves need no permission.
Connecting to the grid in Enfield
Enfield's local electricity network is run by UK Power Networks. Most home systems are notified to them after installation, while larger systems, or a solar and battery set-up with a higher combined output, need approval before work starts. We handle the DNO paperwork as part of every installation, and our article on DNOs and export limits explains how system size affects the process.
If you live in Enfield and want to know what your roof could take, we check the conservation area, any Article 4 direction and whether the property is listed before we quote. To get started, request a solar and battery quotation.
Local planning information checked against London Borough of Enfield sources on 28 October 2026. Planning designations change, so this is general guidance, not advice for a specific property.
Solar Benefits for Enfield Residents
Is my home suitable for solar panels?
During your free home survey we'll assess your roof's orientation, pitch and condition, along with any shading from trees or neighbouring buildings. We'll tell you honestly whether solar is a good fit for your home, and if it is, we'll design the system around getting the best out of it.
How much can I save on my energy bills?
It depends on how much electricity you use, when you use it, the size and orientation of your system, and whether you add a battery to store daytime solar for the evening. Rather than quote a typical figure, we model the expected generation and savings for your home as part of your free quote, using your actual bills and roof.
How long does installation take?
We aim to get your system up and running as quickly as we can. After your survey, installation is typically scheduled within 2–8 weeks, though the exact timing depends on things like DNO approval, scaffolding, roof access and how complex the system is. We agree a date with you once those are confirmed.
Do you offer finance options?
Yes, finance may be available, subject to status. Ask us about it when you request your quote.
What does the quote cover?
Your written quotation lists everything included for your home – the panels, inverter, any battery, mounting, scaffolding where your home needs it, electrical work, DNO paperwork and MCS certification – with one total price. What’s on the quotation is what you pay, with no hidden extras.
Do you offer a guarantee?
We offer a 6-year workmanship warranty, insurance-backed through IWA, on top of the manufacturer warranties covering the panels, inverter and battery. Annual servicing, monitoring checks and fault finding are available as an aftercare service. If something isn’t right with our work, we come back and put it right.
