Solar panels in Redbridge: Wanstead, Woodford and the streets with extra controls
Most houses in Redbridge can usually have solar panels on a pitched roof without a planning application. The borough is unusual, though, because a few of its conservation areas carry Article 4 directions that specifically take away the right to fit solar panels. If you live in Wanstead, Aldersbrook or Snaresbrook, it is worth checking your street before you plan anything.
Conservation areas across the north and west of the borough
Redbridge Council says the borough has 16 conservation areas. Most sit in the older, leafier parts of the borough: Wanstead Village, Wanstead Park, Wanstead Grove, Snaresbrook, South Woodford, Woodford Broadway, Woodford Bridge, Woodford Green and Woodford Wells, plus Aldersbrook and Lake House, Claybury, Little Heath, George Lane, Valentines Mansion, Barnardo's Village Homes and the Bungalow Estate. The council has an online map where you can check whether your address falls inside one.
Under the national rules, the restriction in a conservation area or World Heritage Site applies to panels on a wall fronting a highway, not to a roof slope. Panels on a pitched roof, including a front roof slope, are normally permitted development as long as they sit no more than 0.2 m proud of the roof and below the ridge. Since 27 August 2026, a flat roof in a conservation area needs a short prior approval application to the council first. Our guide to planning permission for solar panels in London explains these rules in more detail.
Article 4 directions that do remove solar rights
We read the directions that affect houses, and they differ a lot from street to street. Our London list of Article 4 directions that affect solar shows which other boroughs have them.
Aldersbrook and Lake House: the direction made in October 2020 covers the whole conservation area. It removes the householder right to fit solar PV or solar thermal panels, and also brings other roof alterations, including replacing roof coverings, under planning control. The council's design guide for the area treats rear roof slopes as the usual acceptable location and says front slopes need care.
1 to 47 Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead: the direction made in December 2012 removes the solar rights that applied at the time, along with roof alterations to slopes facing the street.
2 to 48 The Drive, Snaresbrook: this direction dates from 2001, before householder solar rights existed, so it cannot have removed them. It does control replacing the roof covering, which matters if your roof needs work first.
The Bungalow Estate: we read the 2017 direction too. It takes away the right to fit solar panels on a side wall, or on an outbuilding, and brings roof and other external alterations under control. Panels on the main roof slopes of the bungalows are not named in it, but the roof alteration controls still apply, so we check the details for each address.
If you are in Aldersbrook or on Spratt Hall Road, panels are still possible, but they need a planning application.
Roofs, slate and re-roofing
Aldersbrook's Edwardian houses were mostly roofed in Welsh slate, with some clay plain tiles, and the council expects slate to be replaced like for like. If your roof needs replacing before solar goes on, that roofing work may need permission in Aldersbrook or on The Drive even where the panels would not. Our article on whether you need a new roof before solar covers how to decide.
Listed buildings need planning permission and listed building consent. Redbridge also keeps a Local Heritage List. It is not a statutory listing, but the council takes it into account in planning decisions.
Flats and the grid
Since 27 August 2026, blocks of flats have permitted development rights for solar for the first time. The right belongs to the block, so the freeholder or management company needs to lead, not an individual flat owner.
Redbridge's local electricity network is run by UK Power Networks. We handle the DNO notification or application for you, and our guide to DNOs and export limits explains what that means for system size.
If you live in Redbridge and want to know what is possible on your roof, we check the designations for your address before we quote. Request a solar and battery quotation and we will take it from there.
Local planning information checked against London Borough of Redbridge sources on 28 October 2026. Planning designations change, so this is general guidance, not advice for a specific property.
