Solar panels in Wandsworth: flats, cottage estates and roof controls
Wandsworth is mostly a borough of flats. Census 2021 figures show that around two in three households here live in a flat, either in a purpose-built block or in a converted house. That affects who decides about solar on a roof, and which permissions apply, more than in most of London.
Solar on Wandsworth's blocks and converted houses
If you own a flat, the roof is almost always shared, so the decision sits with the freeholder or management company. Since 27 August 2026, blocks of flats have had permitted development rights for solar for the first time. The right belongs to the block, though, not to an individual flat owner, so bring the freeholder in early. Wandsworth's conservation guidance also points out that householder permitted development rights do not apply to houses converted into flats, which describes many Victorian streets in Battersea, Balham and Tooting. Which rules apply to a converted house is something we check for each address rather than assume. Before you approach a freeholder, it helps to check whether your London roof is suitable for solar.
The cottage estates where re-roofing needs permission
Wandsworth has 46 conservation areas, and eight have Article 4 directions affecting houses. On the council's summary pages for the Shaftesbury Park, Latchmere, Totterdown Fields, Heaver and Dover House estates, and for parts of Roehampton Village (Medfield Street and Hambro House), Putney Lower Common (Commondale) and Wandsworth Common (62 to 72 Wandsworth Common Westside), the controlled works include changes to roofs, including re-roofing in a different material. None of those summary pages mentions solar panels. We also read the directions themselves for Shaftesbury Park, Latchmere, Dover House, Roehampton Village and Wandsworth Common. They date from 1990 to 2004, before householders had permitted development rights for solar, and none of them mentions solar panels.
These estates each have a strong, uniform character. Shaftesbury Park in Battersea is a planned estate of two-storey slate-roofed terraces from the 1870s. Latchmere, completed in 1903, is described by the council as the first municipal housing in the country built by a council's own workforce. Totterdown Fields in Tooting is an early London County Council cottage estate, and its guidance names rear roof slopes, back gardens and shed roofs as discreet places for equipment such as solar panels.
In practice, if your roof needs replacing before panels go on and the covering will change, the re-roofing is likely to need planning permission even when the solar itself does not. Our guide on whether you need a new roof before solar explains how to plan for that.
Conservation areas across the borough
Outside those estates, Wandsworth's conservation areas range from Deodar Road and West Putney to Battersea Square and Clapham Common. Under the national rules, the restriction in a conservation area applies to panels on a wall fronting a highway, not to a roof slope. Panels on a pitched roof, including a front roof slope, are normally permitted development as long as they sit no more than 0.2 m proud of the roof and below the ridge. Since 27 August 2026, a flat roof in a conservation area needs a short prior approval application to the council first. Our guide to planning permission for solar panels in London covers this in more detail.
Roehampton's listed Alton Estate
The Alton Estate Conservation Area in Roehampton has more listed buildings, particularly at Grade I and Grade II*, than any other conservation area in Wandsworth. They include the five slab blocks on Highcliffe Drive (Grade II*) and the ten point blocks in Alton East (Grade II). Listed buildings need planning permission and listed building consent for solar, and for a block, the right to install sits with whoever manages the building.
Connecting to the grid in Wandsworth
Wandsworth's local electricity network is run by UK Power Networks. Smaller systems are usually notified to the network operator after installation, while larger systems, or those exporting above set limits, need approval before they connect. You can read more about DNOs and export limits.
We check the conservation area, Article 4 and listing status for your address before we quote, and we handle the DNO notification for you. If you live in Wandsworth and want to know what is possible on your roof, request a solar and battery quotation.
Local planning information checked against Wandsworth Borough Council sources on 27 October 2026. Planning designations change, so this is general guidance, not advice for a specific property.
Solar Benefits for Wandsworth Residents
Is my home suitable for solar panels?
During your free home survey we'll assess your roof's orientation, pitch and condition, along with any shading from trees or neighbouring buildings. We'll tell you honestly whether solar is a good fit for your home, and if it is, we'll design the system around getting the best out of it.
How much can I save on my energy bills?
It depends on how much electricity you use, when you use it, the size and orientation of your system, and whether you add a battery to store daytime solar for the evening. Rather than quote a typical figure, we model the expected generation and savings for your home as part of your free quote, using your actual bills and roof.
How long does installation take?
We aim to get your system up and running as quickly as we can. After your survey, installation is typically scheduled within 2–8 weeks, though the exact timing depends on things like DNO approval, scaffolding, roof access and how complex the system is. We agree a date with you once those are confirmed.
Do you offer finance options?
Yes, finance may be available, subject to status. Ask us about it when you request your quote.
What does the quote cover?
Your written quotation lists everything included for your home – the panels, inverter, any battery, mounting, scaffolding where your home needs it, electrical work, DNO paperwork and MCS certification – with one total price. What’s on the quotation is what you pay, with no hidden extras.
Do you offer a guarantee?
We offer a 6-year workmanship warranty, insurance-backed through IWA, on top of the manufacturer warranties covering the panels, inverter and battery. Annual servicing, monitoring checks and fault finding are available as an aftercare service. If something isn’t right with our work, we come back and put it right.
