Are you considering solar panels but wondering what size system you need for your home? Worry no more! We've got you covered. In this blog, we'll dive into typical energy usages for different home scenarios and provide tailored solar system size recommendations. So, let’s get started and find your perfect solar match!
The Basics: Understanding Your Energy Usage
Before making any recommendations, it helps to know how much electricity your household actually uses. Ofgem's benchmark figures for a home on a standard single-rate meter, updated on 1 July 2026, are 1,600 kWh a year for a low user, 2,500 kWh for a medium user and 3,800 kWh for a high user. The medium figure is roughly the median British household. Homes with an electric vehicle, electric heating or a heat pump use considerably more. The scenarios below are a starting point only. We size every system from the annual kWh figure on your own bill rather than from an average.
Small Household
Typical Household:
Occupants: 1-2 people
House Size: 1-2 bedroom flat or small house
Typical yearly electricity use: around 1,600 to 2,000 kWh
Recommended Solar System Size:
A 2 to 3 kWp system is often the right size here, and on a flat or a small terrace it is usually the usable roof area rather than the demand that sets the limit. On a south-facing London roof that would generate roughly 1,900 to 2,900 kWh a year, which on paper is close to a low or medium user's entire annual consumption. In practice you will not use all of it, because most of it arrives in the middle of the day, so we look at your occupancy pattern and your tariff before recommending a size.
Why This Works:
Low Usage Needs: Small households generally have fewer electrical appliances and lower overall energy consumption.
What it realistically covers: without a battery, a typical home uses only part of what it generates and exports the rest, because most generation happens while nobody is in. Adding storage, or moving laundry and dishwashing into daylight hours, raises the share you use yourself.
Medium Household
Typical Household:
Occupants: 3-4 people
House Size: 3-4 bedroom semi-detached or terraced house
Typical yearly electricity use: around 2,500 to 3,500 kWh
Recommended Solar System Size:
A 4 to 5 kWp system is a common fit for a household this size, where the roof allows it. A south-facing, unshaded London roof at around 35 degrees typically produces in the region of 1,000 kWh per kWp a year, so a 4 kWp system would generate roughly 3,800 to 4,200 kWh and a 5 kWp system roughly 4,700 to 5,200 kWh. East or west-facing roofs, shallower pitches and shading from trees, chimneys or neighbouring buildings reduce this, often to 750 to 900 kWh per kWp. Every quotation we issue uses the MCS standard estimation method for your actual postcode, roof orientation, pitch and measured shading rather than a rule of thumb.
Why This Works:
Moderate Energy Needs: Medium households have more appliances, including washing machines, dishwashers, and maybe a home office setup.
Roof area is usually the real limit: a 4 to 5 kWp array needs roughly 20 to 25 square metres of usable roof. Where the roof takes more, filling it is often the better decision, because scaffolding, labour and the inverter cost much the same whether we fit ten panels or fourteen.
Large Household
Typical Household:
Occupants: 5+ people
House Size: 5+ bedroom detached house
Typical yearly electricity use: around 4,000 to 6,000 kWh, and higher again with an electric vehicle, electric heating or a heat pump
Recommended Solar System Size:
Larger homes usually have the roof area for a 6 to 10 kWp system. On the same basis that would generate roughly 5,700 to 9,500 kWh a year on a good south-facing roof, and less on east or west pitches or where there is shading. At this size the grid connection matters: anything above 3.68 kW of inverter capacity on a single phase needs a G99 application to your DNO and their approval before the system is switched on, and they can set an export limit. We make that application as part of the job.
Why This Works:
High Energy Demands: Larger homes typically have higher energy consumption due to more occupants and additional appliances like multiple refrigerators, large laundry needs, and extensive lighting.
Storage earns its keep sooner: a larger array generates well beyond what the house is using in the middle of the day, so without a battery a bigger share of it is exported. How much you use yourself depends on your occupancy pattern, your tariff and whether storage is fitted.
Extra Tips for Maximising Efficiency
Consider Energy-Efficient Appliances:
No matter the size of your household, investing in energy-efficient appliances can significantly reduce your overall energy consumption, maximising the benefits of your solar system.
Battery Storage:
Including a battery storage solution in your solar setup allows you to store excess energy generated during the day for use at night or during peak hours, enhancing your energy independence.
Smart Home Integration:
Integrating smart home devices can help monitor and manage your energy consumption more effectively, allowing you to make the most out of your solar investment.
